Orphans Embrace Ministers in Haiti

Orphans Embrace, the newest ministry of the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, sponsored a mission trip to Haiti in September. A team of Louisiana Baptists from Calvary Baptist in Alexandria, First Baptist Monroe and Trinity Baptist in Oak Grove, joined together with other missionaries from Florida to assist with the rebuilding the Enfants Demunies Orphanage in Bon Repos, Haiti, near the capital of Port-au-Prince. The original orphanage was destroyed in the January 2010 earthquake that killed more than 250,000 Haitians. Haiti remains one of the poorest countries in the world with a population of over 9 million people.

Sixty-eight children are currently being housed in a make-shift dwelling consisting of two rooms with dirt floors, no running water or sewage until they can move into the new orphanage. Due to unforeseen construction delays, it seemed doubtful this team would be able complete all the projects scheduled for the week. However, by the grace of God and the hard work and dedication of the mission team, not only were scheduled projects completed, additional projects were accomplished that far exceeded construction expectations for the week. The mission team was grateful to know that their work will make it possible for the children to move into the new orphanage before Christmas!

In addition to God working through the mission team to accomplish construction goals, God’s love was shown through the team in other ways. Team members held VBS and recreational times with the children each day. What a blessing it was to hear the children lift their voices in joyful praise to our God singing “This Is the Day” in Haitian Creole and then in English. What a joy to see their beautiful smiles as the Word of God was shared during Bible time each day.

Some team members also had the opportunity to share the Gospel with families in the village near the orphanage site and over 50 people came to Christ. Drew Rivers, Missions Pastor at Calvary in Alexandria, helped lead evangelism efforts during the week and stated, “I have served on other foreign mission trips and have seen God move in the hearts of many, but I have never seen such a hunger and searching for Christ as in Haiti. Haiti is truly ‘ripe for the harvest.”’

Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home and Orphans Embrace will sponsor mission trips to Haiti, Guatemala and Nicaragua in 2013. Volunteers are needed and all of our trips will focus on ministering to the needs of children. For more information, please contact Beth Green at 318.343.2244 or beth@lbch.org.
