Not long ago I read again 1 Thessalonians 5:18 in one of my devotional books. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” The verse reminded me of the children and mothers on our campus who face challenging circumstances. Most of our children have been removed from their families because of abuse or neglect. Our homeless mothers and their children are often the victims of domestic violence. If I were in their shoes, it would be difficult to give thanks.
At the Children’s Home, we try our absolute best every day to give the children and mothers something to be thankful for even in the midst of their difficult circumstances. We love them and encourage them. We support them in so many ways. We help them know how precious they are to God. We tell them what Jesus has done for them.
At Thanksgiving, we have a very special time on campus. The children and mothers help with cottage decorations. On Wednesday, we have a special worship service in the chapel, praising God for all His blessings in our lives. Often in that service, we give everyone an opportunity to express their thankfulness. The children thank God for everything from their cottage parents to their bicycles. The mothers are thankful to feel safe and loved again.
The worship service is followed by a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch. The room is adorned with beautiful autumn decorations. We enjoy an incredible meal prepared by our staff. The room is filled with joy and laughter. Once again, we celebrate the goodness of God.
On Thanksgiving Day, each cottage has its own special celebration. Some have craft projects for the children. Others tell Thanksgiving stories from history that reflect the true meaning of the holiday. Of course, they all have a great feast of food and most of all another time to reflect upon God’s blessings even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
First, let me thank you for making it all possible. Without your generous and faithful support, Thanksgiving would not be such a wonderful time for our children and mothers. But because of your commitment and sacrificial giving, Thanksgiving is a celebration that has an incredible impact on the hearts and lives of those in need.
Second, this Thanksgiving, let us remember the call to rejoice and give thanks in all circumstances. As we gather around our tables, may we reflect on the blessings we have received from God and consider how we can share those blessings with others. Let us commit to creating a spirit of gratitude in our hearts, being thankful not only for our abundance but also for the opportunities we have to give and support those in need.
Thank you again, for meeting needs and sharing Christ through the ministries of your Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. May God bless you and your family as you have blessed our family here.
